Framed between the Renaissance walls, there is the old town of Ibiza, known as “Dalt Vila“, which means “the upper part of the city.”
UNESCO declared this ancient fortified acropolis, World Heritage Site in 1999.
Dalt Vila can be accessed through the entrance gates of Dalt Vila by car, but we decided to walk; we had had a big lunch and we needed to flush it down! 😉
The main door is known as “Portal de Ses Taules” located next to the “Mercat Vell”, but there are other gateways. I went by another, but I do not remember its name.
I do not know if there is a certain path to follow; I was guided by my intuition and the truth is that the walk was joyful; I got lost among the narrow cobbled streets, most very steep.
By the way, I recommend to be careful and to wear comfortable shoes because some streets are slippery; it is true that I am somewhat clumsy, but the reality is that I slipped on this slope and I ended up on the floor laughing in a position that’s hard to describe. Hahaha
Just after the fall, next to this cannon, we met a very friendly couple from Germany. The woman was worried when she saw me climbing the wall; she was afraid I was going to fall to the other side. She was so sweet and we had a fun time talking after that. 🙂
Along the streets there are several signs with historical explanations, as well as small shops, art galleries, restaurants, charming cottages, etc.
If we reach the top we’ll find the cathedral, dedicated to “La Virgen de las Nieves”, Saint Patroness of Ibiza.
By the way, although everyone knows me as Neyu, my real name is Neus, a Catalan name that means Nieves in Spanish (snow in English), the Saint Patroness of Ibiza. 😜
At the Cathedral Square, there is the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza.
Just behind the Cathedral, there is a lookout, overlooking the port and Formentera island.
There was a group of musicians who brought the evening to life with live music that day.
And this is all the information I can give you. If you are interested in the story behind Dalt Vila, you can visit this website, maybe it will help you.
