Koh Samui is a place to explore because of the natural beauty that it offers; palm trees, white sand, turquoise waters, vegetation and waterfalls. Whether you are an active person or a quieter one in Koh Samui you’ll find your spot.
On the island you can find a variety of restaurants, activities and tourist areas to hang out.
Also, for those who want to relax and be more in touch with nature, Koh Samui still preserves pristine areas free from contamination.
The climate is ideal to enjoy the beaches at any time of day. The average temperature is about 30° C. You can have a good time just walking, drinking a delicious coconut, relaxing on the sand, etc. You will also find a wide variety of water activities to do: diving, snorkeling , paddle surfing, canoeing, rent jet skis, etc.
The most beautiful beaches are Chaweng , Lamai , Bophut, Lipa , Maenam , Taling , Hua Thankn , Choeng Mon and Silver beach.
I prefer to visit non-tourist areas, exploring by myself and finding hidden uncrowded beaches, something that it is easy to do in Koh Samui.
The Big Buddha
I would really recommend to visit the Giant Buddha, known locally as Wat Phra Yai. It is possibly the most characteristic attraction of Koh Samui, testimony of the local culture and religion. It’s a golden statue of about 12 meters high located in the northeast corner of Koh Samui, built in 1972 .
At the base of the statue you will find different shops and small food stalls. I went to visit it in the evening, when is no longer so hot and I drunk a fresh fruit juice while enjoying the sunset over the sea.
Wat Plai Laem
It’s a compound of Buddhist temples located on the northeast coast of Samui. The statue of Guanyin, with 18 arms, represents the goddess of clemency and compassion. You’ll also find a large white statue of a laughing Buddha.
The setting is very nice, surrounded by a lake with fish offering an environment full of peace and tranquility.
Admission is free but I would recommend to leave a donation.
Since these temples are sacred places, it’s good to go with appropriate clothing, avoiding beachwear and shorts.
Sunset and sunrise
In the evening I love to watch the sunset. In the western coast of Koh Samui you can find many beaches to relax and enjoy the natural colors staining the sky and the sea. For me it’s an indescribable feeling …
A typical place for both, locals and tourists is Big Buddha Beach, where you’ll find the famous Sunset Cafe or Big Buddha Cafe (BBC). There are many restaurants offering the option of dinner or drinks on the beach or on the sand. What I used to do, was to go a little early, so I could write for a while before having dinner while watching the sunset.
If you are a couple a romantic option is to have dinner on one of the floating platforms that some hotels and restaurants offer.
For early birds who want to enjoy the sunrise, I recommend going to the area of Lamai .
Specifically in Hin Ta and Hin Yai , you’ll find beautiful rock formations, an area of pure natural art, hiding a popular legend.
At the heart of Bophut you will find the fishing village, a quite area with beach, restaurants, shops and a variety of activities. The simple fact of walking the streets it is such a pleasure.
On Friday evening, between 17:00 and 22:00 there is a local market. The stores put their products outside, and the streets become an exclusively pedestrian area (no cars allowed) . There is music everywhere and you can breath a pleasant atmosphere.
If you love seafood , you will find restaurant with fresh, local and delicious seafood!
You will realize that the same product has different different prices in different places, take your time and enjoy the walk! haha
Namuang waterfalls are located 10km south of Nathon. You will find two waterfalls, the first is about 18 meters high and the second is about 80 meters high , where you can only arrive by foot (about 30 minutes walk).
I love all the activities in contact with nature. I could walk the whole day watching the art of the earth.
Koh Samui is great destination fort the yoga lovers. You’ll find many resorts and centres with a wide variety of options.
I had the opportunity to experience the classes offered in Vikasa Yoga Retrat.
